Luther Experience  -  Germany Tour

This fabulous 13-Day program is a comprehensive tour of Luther sites throughout Germany.  Our trip includes popular tourist activities, including visits to Berlin, Munich, Neuschwanstein Castle and Heidelberg, as well as a cruise on the Rhine River.  In addition we'll visit sites around Germany of Luther significance, including Wittenberg, Eisleben, Erfurt, Wartburg Castle, Coburg, Augsburg and Worms.  This tour will appeal to those curious about Luther's history, and desirous of experiencing key tourist sites as well!

Sample Group Itinerary 


Day 1  -  Depart USABerlin - Brandenburg Gate
Depart the USA via overnight flight bound for Berlin.

Day 2  -  Arrive Berlin
Morning arrival in Berlin.  On arrival we are met by our Tour Director, and transferred to our hotel.  The afternoon is free to rest or to begin exploring Berlin on your own.  This evening we will enjoy a welcome dinner.  (D)

Day 3  -  Berlin  -  Wittenberg
A full day of sightseeing is planned for today in the German capital.  We’ll see the famous sites, including the Brandenburg Gate, the Reichstag, Checkpoint Charlie, the Kaiser Wittenberg - Marktplatz
Wilhelm Memorial Church, and remnants of the Berlin Wall.  In the late afternoon we’ll depart Berlin and drive south to reach Wittenberg.  There we'll have dinner and overnight.  (B,D)

Day 4  -  Wittenberg  -  Leipzig  -  Eisleben
This morning we’ll visit sites in Wittenberg, the city of the Lutheran reformation, including Luther’s house, the Stadtkirche, the University, and the All Saints Castle Church where Luther nailed his 95 Theses on the door.  In the afternoon we visit Leipzig.  Points of interest include Augustusplatz, the market, and the church where Bach was an organist.  Then we proceed to Eisleben for dinner and overnight.  (B,D)

Day 5  -  Eisleben  -  Mansfeld  -  Buchenwald  -  ErfurtLuther's Birthplace - Eisleben
In the morning we take a tour of Eisleben, where Luther was born and died (in 1483 and 1546).  We’ll see the churches where Luther was baptized, and where he preached his last sermon, as well as the house of his birth and the Luther Monument.  Then we proceed to the town of Mansfeld, nearby, where Luther spent his early years.  In the afternoon we continue to Erfurt.  Along the way we stop to visit a Nazi concentration camp – Buchenwald.    (B,D)

Day 6  -  Erfurt  -  Wartburg Castle  -  Eisenach  -  Erfurt
Our morning visits in Erfurt include the University which Luther attended, St. Mary’s Cathedral, St. Severus Church, and the Augustinian monastery where Martin Luther was a monk.  In the afternoon the travel west the town of Eisenach, to see sites including the Luther House,
where Luther lived while attending school, and the Bach House, commemorating JohannWartburg Castle

Bach, who was born in Eisenach.  Then we visit the Wartburg Castle.  It is here that Luther hid in 1521 and 1522, taking on the assumed name of Knight George, after being placed under an imperial ban.  While here, he translated the New Testament into German.  Back to Erfurt for dinner and overnight.  (B,D)

Day 7  -  Erfurt  -  Coburg  -  Nuremberg  -  Augsburg
Proceeding south from Erfurt, our first visit is to the town of Coburg, famous for its bratwurst.  We’ll see the Veste Coburg Fortress, where Luther spent some time under protection.  Continuing, we arrive at Nuremberg, the second-largest city in Bavaria.  It wasMunich - City Center
from here that Luther began his journey to Rome in 1510.  We’ll visit the Old Town with its many points of interest.  We end the day at Augsburg, where we have dinner and overnight.  (B,D)

Day 8  -  Augsburg  -  Munich  -  Augsburg
In Augsburg, we’ll visit St. Anne’s Church, where, in 1518, Luther met with Cardinal Cajetan.  The Cardinal demanded that Luther submit to the Pope.  We’ll also see the Augustus Fountain, the Church of the Holy Cross, and other sites.  The afternoon will be spent in Munich, the capital of Bavaria, where we visit the Marienplatz, and see the Town Hall, Cathedral, and
Newschwanstein Castleother sites.  Return to Augsburg.  (B,D)

Day 9  -  Augsburg  -  Neuschwanstein  -  Romantic Road  -  Rothenburg
We drive south from Augsburg this morning to reach Neuschwanstein, the fairy tale castle built by King Ludwig II, near the town of Füssen.  We visit the castle, and then travel along the Romantic Road to reach Rothenburg ob der Tauber, where we have dinner and overnight.  (B,D)

Day 10  -  Rothenburg  -  Heidelberg  -  Worms
Rothenburg is Germany’s best-preserved walled city.  We’ll take a walking tour of the town this
Heidelberg & Castlemorning, and see sites including the Rathaus and the Kriminal-Museum.  Then it’s on to Heidelberg.  On arrival, we visit the famous Castle, the University, and the Stone Bridge.  We continue to the town of Worms for dinner and overnight.  (B,D)

Day 11  -  Worms  -  Rüdesheim
Worms is where Luther, in 1521, appeared before the Holy Roman Emperor and the Imperial Diet.  He refused to recant his beliefs, and made the famous statement, “Here I stand, I can do no other.  God help me.”   This morning we’ll visit the Reformation Monument and the Cathedral.  In the afternoon we proceed to Rüdesheim, in the romantic Rhine valley.  (B,D)

Day 12  -  Rüdesheim  -  Rhine River Cruise  -  Rüdesheim
Worms CathedralThis morning we take a cruise on the Rhine River, passing many small villages and the famous Lorelei Rock.  The afternoon is at leisure.  A farewell dinner with wine is planned for this evening.  (B,D)

Day 13  -  Rüdesheim to USA
This morning we transfer to Frankfurt airport, where we board our return flight back to the USA.  We arrive back home the same day.
